{"id":485,"date":"2018-04-19T16:59:05","date_gmt":"2018-04-19T16:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.navigatingreentry.org\/?page_id=485"},"modified":"2018-05-14T16:37:54","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T16:37:54","slug":"social-security-ssi-benefits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.navigatingreentry.org\/index.php\/social-security-ssi-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Security\/SSI Benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-486 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.navigatingreentry.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/soc-sec.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"181\" \/><span style=\"color: #000080;\">WHAT ARE SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Social Security is a United States federal program of\u00a0social\u00a0insurance and\u00a0benefits\u00a0developed in 1935.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0Social Security\u00a0program&#8217;s\u00a0benefits<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>include retirement income, disability income, Medicare and Medicaid, and death and survivorship\u00a0benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">AM I ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS IF I HAVE BEEN INCARCERATED?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yes.\u00a0 Even if you have been\u00a0incarcerated you may be eligible for\u00a0<strong>Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits\u00a0<\/strong>if you have worked or paid into Social Security enough years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Or you may be eligible for\u00a0<strong>Supplemental Security Income<\/strong> benefits\u00a0if you are 65 or older, or are blind, or have a disability and have little or no income and resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">People need funds to cover living expenses when they are released from prison.\u00a0 To help make a successful transition back into the community, you should apply for benefits you may be eligible for as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I WAS RECEIVING SOCIAL SECURITY OR SSI BENEFITS BEFORE I WAS INCARCERATED.\u00a0 DO I STILL HAVE THEM NOW?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If you were receiving Social Security or SSI before you were incarcerated, those benefits were suspended when you were confined to prison or jail.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If you were receiving Social Security benefits, the benefits remained suspended until you are released<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If you were receiving SSI benefits, those benefits are terminated if you were incarcerated for a year or more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">HOW SOON CAN BENEFITS BE STARTED AFTER MY RELEASE?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The amount of time it takes to start benefits will depend on your particular situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If Social Security benefits were only suspended, Social Security can usually restart them without much delay.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If benefits were terminated, benefits can take a few months to start again.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If you were n ot previously entitled or eligible for benefits a new application will be required.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">HOW DO I APPLY FOR SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">You can apply for Social Security or SSI benefits in several ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Online &#8211; Use the <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Social Security\u00a0<a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/retireonline\/\">Retirement\/Medicare Benefit Application<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>to apply for retirement, spouse&#8217;s, ex-spouse&#8217;s or Medicare benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">By phone &#8211; Call us at\u00a0<strong>1-800-772-1213<\/strong>.\u00a0If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you can call us at TTY\u00a0<strong>1-800-325-0778<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In person &#8211; Visit your<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">\u00a0<strong><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/locator\/\">local Social Security office<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. (Call first to make an appointment.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">You must be at least 61 years and 9 months old to apply for retirement benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If you are already age 62, you may be able to start your benefits in the month you apply.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">You should apply for benefits no more than four months before the date you want your benefits to start.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Benefits are paid the month after they are due.
